Resilient Systems

Fostering sustainable forest and land-use, community adaptive capacity and resilience to climate and environmental change.

Rural and Indigenous communities are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of environmental change, including climate change, and the cumulative effects of resource extraction. I work collaboratively with communities and Indigenous peoples seeking pathways through which to thrive in a context of change.

Protecting cultural values through participatory impact measurement

Through funding from the Canadian government and fRI Research in Hinton, Alberta we are advancing the protection of cultural values and traditional practices that contribute to food security, traditional medicines, identity, and resilience of Indigenous peoples in the boreal forest.

Participatory identification of key values, indicators, and viable thresholds will support improved understanding, measurement, monitoring, and communication of impacts from cumulative disturbance on the land.

Regional forest conservation & rural development in Latin America and the Caribbean

In Cuba, working for the Canadian International Development Agency, Cuban National Forests Ministry I conducted stakeholder interviews, toured operations, and developed recommendations to advance strategic planning and operations for the Sabanas de Manacas Model Forest initiative.

With the Chilean Forests Ministry and CUSO International I supported strategic planning activities, co-facilitation of stakeholder planning workshops, and program impact evaluation for participatory conservation & development initiatives.

See Forest Management and Conservation for more on community-driven initiatives and impact measurement.
