Forest Management & Conservation

My work in Canada and internationally involves participatory and multi-stakeholder initiatives focused on sustainable forest management, livelihoods and rural development, and response to environmental change, including climate change.

Forest conservation-carbon projects in Western Canada

These initiatives leveraged voluntary carbon markets to support the creation of two provincial parks, and the Haida Gwaii component of the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project, led by the Haida people. Through New Forest Outlook Ltd. I provided professional oversight in the form of due diligence procedures, and support to forest inventory and carbon sequestration estimates.

Afforestation and REDD+ in the Democratic Republic of Congo

From 2011 I continue supporting the program design and impact monitoring for avoided deforestation initiatives in Central Africa through my consulting company New Forest Outlook Ltd. This work involves community engagement and focal issue analysis, rural development and biodiversity conservation program design including theory of change analysis, High Conservation Values, and the design of social and biodiversity outcome and impact monitoring procedures.

Recent work includes REDD+ support for the Bonobo Conservation Initiative, and CO2 sequestration estimates and feasibility assessment for village-based afforestation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

Sustainable forest management and forest stewardship certification.

As a Registered Professional Forester in the province of British Columbia, Canada, I ensured that industry forest operations compliance with policy requirements, conducted field assessments including ecological site identification, riparian and soil classification, developed innovative selective harvesting plans and the retention of stand structural diversity to protect habitat and biodiversity values, engaged with diverse stakeholders to meet operational and biodiversity objectives, and supervised reforestation activities and wildfire crews.
